Should you Venture into Foreign Markets?

by Evan K. Reilly

Try to think of some common brands and companies. What did you come up with? You probably thought of Wal-Mart, GE, Apple, and others. Do a search for brands online, and you will probably find some you aren’t so familiar with.

Most people concentrate their stock investments in domestic companies. This is especially true for beginners. In fact, most probably invest all of their money in domestic companies. Those from other countries may do the same.

Whether you realize it or not, a lot of the companies you know and see everyday are actually not American countries. They exists in other foreign countries. Some common ones include Toyota, Canon, and Nestle. Of course, there are many more foreign companies you don’t know.

These companies will not be found on the NYSE, they are listed on the foreign exchange of the country they are from. Because they are not American companies, are they less stable? Should you invest in them?

You shouldn’t stay away from investing in foreign companies. It can be very beneficial. It will add further diversification and you can choose from even more growth and value stocks. If you haven’t already been investing in foreign companies, it’s probably because you weren’t aware of them, or you weren’t sure if they were safe or worth your time.

You should really look at all companies when you are considering companies to invest in. For example, Toyota is a great investment because its hybrid cars are doing so well. Don’t avoid foreign companies just because you think they are riskier or inferior. All stock investments are risky. You might as well get one that’s going to make you a lot of money.

When you begin to look into foreign markets, don’t sell off all your domestic stock and go 100 percent international. If you have a large amount of assets invested in domestic companies or even if you are just beginning, start slow. Buy a company or two that you have done extensive research on and are confident will earn you a high return.

The worst part about investing abroad is probably that fact that financial reporting and accounting standards are not the same worldwide. This could pose some more risk, but not much. The standards for reporting are becoming universal worldwide and being set up better all the time.
