There are two kinds of gamblers in life: those that know they are gamblers, and those that don’t. Life is full of gambles, big and small. Many people gamble for fun or to try and make money, but gambling in life is different.

If you press the snooze button three times instead of just once, you’re gambling you’ll still make it to work on time. If you go 70 mph in a 50, you’re gambling there’s not a police car nearby. If you don’t study until a twenty minutes before your final, you’re gambling you’ll somehow remember everything from the last semester.

Some people like to gamble. They like the excitement, the adrenalin rush of winning or beating the odds. These people often embrace the unknown. They can be seen running red lights late at night, balancing precariously placed books in one hand, eating unrecognizable substances, or found in casinos. As a whole, these are the risk-takers.

Then there are those that attempt to play it safe. These people do their work ahead of time and usually abide by the law. They people do their work on time and are generally good law-abiding citizens. You won’t find these people buying lottery tickets. Yet, even these kinds of people take gambles. Gambles are very similar to risks. Life will always have risks, some that can be avoided, some that can’t. Some risks are worth the gamble to some people but not to others and vice versa. Some risks are immediate and more dangerous too.

Yet, some risks have much more at stake. Take for an example, protecting your home. A home tells you a lot about a person. A home is composed of your art, your favorite books and movies, pictures, technology, your memories. Yet every time you leave home you are gambling. Whether you consider yourself a gambler or not, without home security, you are gambling against your home. You may think you can beat the odds or that the odds work in your favor, but in the end, remember what gambling means. The question is, are you a gambling person?

The cost of a call and the cost of a put are almost directly related. If you have a $40 stock, a $40 call and a $40 put will be almost exactly the same price most of the time. If there is a difference, the possibility of an arbitrage usually exists meaning that there is a 0 risk strategy (minus commissions) to get something for nothing. This is true whether it’s a collar or another strategy. I don’t completely understand the full process that allows for that to happen, but a complex series of trades usually makes it possible. So if the price of a call and put are going to be the same that means generally the higher priced calls are due to greater risk. Some reasons may be historical volatility, as that plays a roll, but the implied volatility, that is, how much people expect or are betting on the stock to move, becomes important.
